The Power of Social Media


In today’s generation, social media has become such a powerful tool that people in all parts of the planet can now be easily and instantly be informed and empowered”, Raine Alerta cited as she discussed the topic of social media before the KSearch employees on Thursday, March 27th.  Raine’s presentation was part of the KSearch’s year-long Knowledge Enhancement Program or KEP as it is more fondly referred to in the company.  She pointed out that the more popular social media websites creating serious influential trends are those of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Rappler and Linkedin. She then stressed the many impacts of social media as follows:

 

·         Through recent years, these websites have either evoked or provoked positive changes in national economies, educational systems and especially during political upheavals.  Surely, the social media have proved to be invaluable communication links during times of natural calamities and cases of emergencies affecting individuals, cities or countries.

 

·         In our own work in the search industry, social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Blog sites play a significant role. These sites do not just provide useful information but they also allow people to easily track and communicate with other individuals. Through social media sites like Facebook and Yahoo!, one can create online communities where he can immediately share information, ideas and send personal messages to an individual or to a targeted group of people – all in the comfort of their own homes.

 

 

·         During the election periods, social media is widely used by candidates running for office to share their platforms to the voting population. In turn, social media is also used by voters to research and assess the candidates running for office in order to make a wise decision. They keep themselves updated from time to time about these candidates through live feeds in the different networking sites.  Thus, social media can truly help shape the political landscape of a country.

 

·         Social media has its own downside, however.  Compulsive use of mobile phones and tablets has been observed as causing an alarming trend of reduced human interaction.  When there are gatherings, people would miss out on the opportunity of bonding with their families and friends in favor of being immersed with their handheld gadgets.

 

“Overall, Raine concluded, it cannot be denied that social media has been a tremendous boon to the general population of our present world.  Clearly we are all more linked to each other than ever before.  It defies our imagination what social media would become five years from now.”

 

The consensus of the group is that it can only get better for all of us.  Besides, the social media is no longer just a phenomenon but an inevitable reality that we must embrace and take good advantage of – in our individual lives, in our careers, in the homes and in the community. That said, we should, however, not lose our “humanness” in the way we interact with each other.   Social media is not a trade-off to human interaction, but a mere tool.
