The Search for a better 2013 Starts in You

New Year is a good time to fix some broken tracks at work whether you are in an executive post or otherwise.  Fine tuning the path and learning what got derailed on your Philippine’ business over the past year can brighten upcoming possibilities.

And sometimes, all it takes is just a clear, honest evaluation of ourselves and with this, I mean not just always “the” major changes or soul-searching realizations that can shake the world.

Start with small concerns and if properly resolved, may, in fact, create a better outcome for you and the company.  Here are some matters to think about:

  •  Attitude  - There is no way that you go to work happy every day.  Being dependent on happiness would mean days of less output the moment you feel otherwise, or worse, even zero productivity until you stumble upon the happy mood again. For how long? Perhaps by the time you are past deadline?
  •  Time Management - Facebook updates are eternal.  Red highlights in the notification section will never end, right? So do not attempt to be in-the-know and on the loop at all times; there is nothing much you can do anyway even if you are. What to do then if you are so engrossed using FB? Focus on your tasks -- then allot 30-minutes to one-hour only in a day devoting to your social media interactions.
  •  Disposition - Stay positive.  Fight the urge to go the south side of positive.  It’s not all the time a walk in the park but this is the time to summon your inner strength.   Who said it’s going to be easy succeeding?

Think of the small pressing issues you may have struggled through in 2012.  Review how they might have hindered your growth.  Devise realistic ways to overcome the constraints; then witness how it progresses to bigger and better improvements for the New Year.

Validate a Good First Impression

It’s rather disconcerting, even scary to some extent, to contemplate that our personal and private lives are pretty much accessible to a stranger.  Who we are and what we are doing is just a Google-click away. Type your name on the search box and discover how much information about you is broadcasted not just for viewers in the Philippines but around the world – no small thanks to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and loads of other social media accounts you may have.

Maybe it is time to check the privacy settings and do some “untaggings”!

But you can not stop Google to list how it sees you online. After all, being found is not at all bad. Just filter what needs to be filtered – such as perhaps those outrageous-looking drunken men including the tipsy you in the photo or the harsh status you posted in direct reference to your executive.

We always want to leave a good impression, especially during the first encounter, right?  The same innate motivation on our part holds true towards any one searching for us in the web. We don’t want our long-forgotten-kindergarten-classmate view a disgruntled photo of ourselves on Facebook.  Or, for that matter, a potential employer to read a poorly prepared LinkedIn profile.

Before you step in the office boardroom for an interview, it is most likely that the interviewer has already conducted his cyber research.  Kudos to your blog, he probably knows the name of your pet and even has a good sense of why you are resigning from your current job. So even before you could dazzle with the “technical jargons” about your work and start citing your desire for “better opportunities”, the interviewer might have already formulated his initial perception about you.   Well, if he has, you would hope that they are all positive, right?

What to do, then?  By all means, create a positive impact about yourself to the rest of the world.  Prune out any and all undesirable word, phrases, photos and whatever other items that may be ascribed to your cyber-based persona.

Good luck!

When Things Go Wrong

You did not hit the target for the month. The presentation with the executives did not go as smoothly as planned.  You have to improve your recruitment strategy; number of clients called in to complain about the harsh behavior of your employees. Your most trusted staff filed for resignation. A new multinational and Philippine-based business partner backed out from the agreement. Your printer is jammed and you need to have hardcopy of  the files immediately or else!

Whew, what a day!

Things like these do happen; well, at least not every day and not to everyone.  But perhaps something went wrong unknowingly on your part that triggered those series of events which ultimately got out of hand.  Mind you, these things don’t develop overnight, to be sure.  Root causes of such major mishaps have a way of germinating and taking a protracted gestation period.  Problems have a way of growing or building up.  Admit it though -- you must have been too pre-occupied with less urgent issues not to have caught the signs early enough and therefore did not do a thing to nip any of them in the bud, so to speak.   Anyway, now that those things have gone south the way they did, what are you going to do next?

Are you just going to agonize in complete surrender? Spend weeks distraught, disheartened, hopeless and helpless?

Hold it -- it’s not the end of the world; it can’t be, or it shouldn’t be.  At the very least, you should muster enough courage, step back, and try the following:

1. Be in control. Don’t escape the problem or blame anyone because of what happened. Don’t run away and simply wish for things to get better instantly, although that sounds like the easy way out.  This is the time you will need to be cool, be deliberate and be in control of yourself.  For a start, you need a recovery strategy, sort of.  Analyze your whole life’s activities.  Distinguish between what’s important from what is urgent.

2. Consult, seek counsels.   Because you are too close to your problems (like not being able to see the specks under both your eyes), eat the “humble pie” and consult a friend, one you trust. Have him or her give you a perspective of where you might be missing out on the important things requiring your attention.

3.  Be objective.   Time to go rational and systematic in the way you are going to address your urgent issues at hand.  But more importantly, take the mindset that from now on, you are going to be alert in spotting symptoms of potential problem before they develop into real ones.

4.  Restore your optimism.  Moving forward, take heart and this time stay focused.  Remember, things don’t go wrong by themselves.  There are always a variety of factors in play, most of which are controllable and can be or should be addressed early enough.  Take note: problems are not born, they are made.  And, like water, they seek their own level.  Where there are gaps, problems creep in and gradually overtake.

5.  Learn from Past Mistakes or Omissions.   This is the key – do not fall in the same trap as before, i.e., that of probably underestimating the grave impact of missed meetings, underserved clients, flawed presentations, faulty or insensitive communication with a business partner, and yes, neglected staff.  Which finally leads me to offer you a sure-proof reminder, i.e., that of the famous Murphy’s Law: “If things can go wrong, it will.”

But hey, we are not Masters of the Universe for nothing.  We can and will make things right!

Cheers!

Online Presence – Your Indispensable Business Booster

Marketing your business – big or small -- has now completely changed.   In order to advertise your product or service, you don’t have to be a million-dollar company, aim for big promotional budget, or aim the highest executive educational degree.  No need to spend a lot on TV commercial production and air time.  Forget the cost of print advertisements too! Or even bother to headhunt for the best advertising agencies in the Philippines to work on your campaign.

If you love to bake and you produce yummy goodies, you need not be intimidated by the likes of Red Ribbon’s billboards or Goldilocks’ posters.    Even though you are working out of your own home kitchen, there is no barrier these days to make your business grow.   Here’s how:

·         Find your niche.

Identify your specific target market.  Are they your officemates; your friends’ friends; your neighbours; your Google+ circle?  You need to have a specific group in mind and focus on each one so you can specialise your product or service according to what caters best to your target market.

·         Create a website

Website is like your physical store in the global landscape. It is where people can check you out, get more information, conduct research, and canvas your product or service so make sure you have good one.   Remember, this is the key to your marketing ingenuity.

·         Write a blog

Establish yourself as an authority in the field by creating useful contents to your target market and site visitors.  You can use these articles to strengthen your expertise in the industry, invite new people to stay longer on your site, and give old visitors a reason to go back.

·         Be seen

A website is of no use if no one is going there! You need to promote it via social media and directory listing. Create a group or fan page at Facebook, open a Twitter account, join Instagram, connect via LinkedIn. There are tons of tools out there and sometimes it can be really overwhelming to identify which is useful to your business. What to do? For a start, just pick three and manage it well.

·         Interact

You got a couple of fans; you gained followers -- what now? Take care of them. Build a relationship.  Expand! Make sure to update your accounts at least thrice a day. Post relevant articles, useful quotations, and share the highlight of your business.  When they ask, reply immediately. Browse their page, learn about their concerns, and make a quick connection.

Well, we’re pretty sure the above initiatives, if you take them seriously, will gain for you a good piece of the market that you desire.
